A Winner is ...

A winner is not someone who wins at someone's expense. A winner is not someone who makes someone else lose in order to feel OK. A winner does not need to hide behind a mask, a uniform, a title, a weapon, drugs, or alcohol. Winners are "real" people; that is, they are not afraid to be themselves, to be trusting and trustworthy. Winners are secure enough to be responsible for their own choices and responsive to the needs of others. Winners are not afraid to think for themselves, or to say, "I don't know." Winners care enough about themselves and others to listen, to evaluate, to probe, and to come to their own conclusions. Winners do not play games like "helpless", "victim", or "poor me." They assume responsibility for their own lives; they understand their past, live fully in the now, and plan realistically for the future. Winners are able to love and be loving. They are able to accept love and know the difference between dependency and interdependence. Winners know when they are angry and why they are angry, and can listen when others are angry at them. Spontaneous, flexible, confident people with a zest for life, winners do not get their sense of "OK"ness by controlling or abusing others. Winners can discipline themselves; and they can postpone gratification. Winners go after (and get) what they want in socially and morally appropriate ways. Concerned, compassionate, empathetic, and committed, winners are those who can, after a loss or failure, pick themselves up, brush themselves off, and go on to choose life, work, play, and find new people to love.
